Riding the rough mountain roads in Afghanistan for hours on end can leave your body hating you. Sometimes it feels like riding a bull for a day. But now, motor transportation Marines can expect a smoother ride, all while sporting a humvee that looks like it has a tricked-out lift kit.
They call it the Oshkosh TAK-4 independent suspension system, but Marines may call it a luxury. With 14 inches of independent wheel travel, better clearance and shorter braking distance, it can make off-road excursions a bit easier on the cargo, not to mention the passengers.
It also shows that Marines aren’t the only ones that can be tough, yet smooth. It allows more troops and gear to be hauled around and lasts longer than many traditional suspension systems.
The TAK-4 has shown its colors on the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle among others, so you know it’s the real deal. When Marines have had a long and arduous day, getting tossed around on the ride home won’t be such a worry. •
